Professor Poon Wai-Yin Isabella obtained her BSc in Mathematics and MPhil in Statistics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and later completed her Ph.D in Biostatistics at the University of California at Los Angeles. She currently holds the positions of Acting Provost, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Wei Lun
Professor of Statistics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is also a member of the University Council.
Professor Poon’s exceptional teaching has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Award for Teaching Excellence from The University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in 2011. She stands out as one of the two professors in Hong Kong’s higher education sector who were recognized in the award’s inaugural year. She is also the founding chair of the Hong Kong Teaching Excellence Alliance.
Professor Poon is dedicated to enhancing teaching and learning, as evidenced by her leadership in numerous large-scale teaching-related projects and institutional research aimed at enhancing the quality of education in higher education institutions. Beyond the University setting, Professor Poon has actively engaged in community services focused on education, demonstrating her commitment to elevating educational quality in the region. She has served as Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Council, Member of Education Commission, and Member of Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority Council for the HKSAR Government. She was a member of Committee on Self-financing Post-secondary Education, the Council of Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) and Chair of Qualifications and Accreditation Committee of HKCAAVQ.
