Professor Sibrandes Poppema has been president of Sunway University since 2021. He obtained a doctorate and post-doctorate in immunopathology from the University of Groningen and Harvard University respectively, and is in the top 2 per cent of cited authors in immunology. He held leadership positions in healthcare and education as director of laboratory medicine at the Cross Cancer Institute (1978–1995) before moving to the University of Groningen as chairman of pathology (1995–1999), dean of the Medical School (1999–2008) and president of the board (2008–2018).
