14C – Supporting student mobility through generative AI: enhancing access to student experiences in international advising

08:45 - 09:15 24/03/27 ROOM MY 09

Abstract

For students considering study abroad, experience shared by previous participants provide valuable information that helps them understand and prepare for study abroad. In particular, experiences shared by students from the same institution can be especially relevant, relatable, and compelling. However, opportunities to access such experiences are often limited, and even when written study abroad reports are available, students may not be able to efficiently find information relevant to their individual needs.

This presentation introduces a new approach that utilized generative AI, developed in collaboration with international office staff to support the use of accumulated study abroad reports during advising and information sessions. A customized AI was built using reports written by returning students and was used by staff to retrieve and synthesize relevant experiences in response to student inquiries. This enabled advisors to identify and share relevant student experiences more efficiently during advising and information sessions.

While the technical implementation was relatively simple, this demonstrates the potential of transforming accumulated individual student experiences into a usable institutional resource for advising and student mobility support. The presentation will also discuss opportunities and challenges in using generative AI to support the sharing and use of student experience in international engagement.
