17C – Beyond Mobility: Human-Centered Global Learning Models in the AI Age

12:00 - 12:45 24/03/27 ROOM MY 09

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms higher education, institutions face a critical challenge: ensuring that meaningful human connection, intercultural understanding, and global citizenship remain at the heart of internationalisation. At the same time, student and faculty mobility across the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly affected by geopolitics, visa uncertainty, financial pressures, and sustainability concerns, exposing the limitations of strategies that rely primarily on physical mobility.

This café style workshop explores how Internationalisation at Home (I@H) can expand access to human-centered global learning while preserving the core purpose of international education. Through practitioner-led presentations, participants will examine six proven models, including Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), virtual exchange, hybrid programmes, joint and dual degrees, project-based partnerships, and AI-enabled collaborative learning approaches. Each model will be illustrated through practical case studies highlighting implementation strategies, benefits, and challenges.

In the second half, participants working in interdisciplinary teams will engage in a simulation exercise, ‘Build Your Global Campus.’ They will design a one-year I@H strategy navigating realistic constraints and opportunities while applying insights from the session. Participants will take a practical roadmap, new professional connections, and actionable strategies for creating inclusive global learning experiences that place humanity at the core of internationalisation in the AI age.

Learning objectives

  • Evaluate I@H models, including COIL, virtual exchange, hybrid programmes, joint and dual degrees, project-based partnerships, to determine their suitability within different institutional contexts across the Asia-Pacific region
  • Analyse how AI-enabled tools and digital collaboration platforms can expand access to global learning while supporting intercultural competencies, critical thinking and communication skills
  • Design a one-year I@H strategy that aligns with institutional priorities and responds to common challenges such as limited budgets, regulatory requirements, faculty engagement, and student participation
  • Apply human-centred approaches to internationalisation by, inclusive learning experiences, and meaningful global engagement beyond physical mobility
  • Develop an actionable implementation roadmap that can be adapted and championed within your institution through leadership engagement and cross-campus collaboration

Target audience

Vice-Chancellors, Directors of Global Engagement, International educators, SIOs, study abroad and exchange program managers who want to increase student participation in Internationalisation, colleagues who face a paucity of physical outbound mobility, curriculum designers, and faculty invested in global partnerships.
